Inclined To Shadows is a line from a Jim Carroll poem “Junk is just another nine to five gig in the end, only the hours are a bit more inclined towards shadows”. I was a big fan on the Basketball Diaries as a kid. I read all the great dope head writers.
The drawing for the album art is an original doodle from yours truly. That is what I refer to most of my art as, “doodles”. Jennifer Pruitt helped put the rest together. She is who I learned graphic design from. Blame her for all future releases.
Although I call it my first “official” release, it was released after my first official release. I knew it was confusing then, that’s why I came up with the frequency numbering system. That didn’t really catch on either. Still, it was all better than my original sequence idea. To have the numbers all in Binary code. This is why I now refer to this as the “official” in quotations. It’s just the easiest way, just jump on board with me.
I lived a few lives during the 366 days (it was a leap year) of 2016. Somehow I managed to release 3 full albums & 3 half albums. Rejecting The Program (which for most people is my “first” album) was the only one not recorded that year, it was recorded the year before. I don’t recall exactly where & when I met Joshua “Schmitty” Schmidt but he is a sound engineer who used to live in the Phoenix area. It was at his The Record Parlor that Inclined To Shadows was created on a cold & wet December afternoon.
It was within the last 2 weeks of 2016. I felt like a tidal wave crashed on top of me. About a week or so prior to this, I made The Omni Zot Variable at Joe “Dagger” Sawinski’s The Fountain Space. I was developing a cold, my throat was killing me, it was a miserable day in the Valley Of The Sun.
Schmitty greeted me at the front door & I was led around back to an oversized shed in the backyard. The studio was a little cramped, but it was very comfortable. I do recall feeling boxed in. He was a few feet in front of me. He just hit “record” & instructed me to do what I do.
I guess this is a good time to explain to anyone who doesn’t know, that I got my start as a one man band. I used to call it “a single entity orchestra”. What you are hearing is me playing an acoustic guitar, singing, manually manipulating my effects pedals on a table to my left, holding the synth notes on a keyboard with my left foot toes, while programming a drum machine with my right foot toes. What you are hearing is all live. There are no overdubs on this recording or punch ins/outs. He hit “record” & I just made up most of it.
There were a few songs attempted, during the time when all of those albums were created, that didn’t make it to the final releases. These included He Is Risen, Closed-Door Policy, & Demons. The first 2 were part of The Anomaly sessions. Only the 2nd one made it to the final release. Demons was intended for 2 other sessions but was forgotten as best as I remember.
I did attempt to record Closed-Door Policy to be the closer, but my voice gave out at the first chorus. Instead, you get 2 tracks, complete with improvised intros. One man, four limbs, fingers & toes.
