Anything But Mainstream Records Podcast Episode 2
Paraphernalia Boutique is a head shop in Phoenix, Arizona. Founded in 1976 by Barb Zevitz, it has become a hub for the heady culture & an icon in the community. I have been a customer there for almost 20 years. 8 years ago I had a real shitty job at a wholesaler who sold hookahs, hand pipes, whip cream chargers, etc. Despite the bullshit, I met a lot of interesting & rad people.
Barb was one of those people
One day she introduced me to her “cousin” Chris who was visiting from NY. We hit it off professionally & personally. How I started to become a bigger part of the PB family, I can’t really recall. For the last 3 years I have performed at most of their 420 & Halloween parties.
Chris Morris has been a big supporter of my art. He occasionally loans me his PA for gigs when I am in a pinch. One time when I was down on my luck, he gave me a job a few weeks. The Paraphernalia Boutique way is to “stay local”. They don’t just talk it, they walk it. Thousands of dollars in giveaways at their events. I can tell you from working their that everyone is really that nice. It’s wild.
Good vibes always
C-Mo was gracious enough to be the 2nd guest for my podcast experimentations. These are really fun to make. Very time consuming, still cracks me up listening to it for the 100th time.
We cover the history of Paraphernalia Boutique, Their new location a miles north of the original, weed, apartments in NY, the movie They Live, UFO’s, Annubis, Aleister Crowley, Gold Star Chili vs. Skyline Chili, Ohio, golf, Dubs getting roofied on Beale Street in Memphis at B.B. Kings.
Speaking of Dubs, he joined us during the last half after Chris accused Cincinnati of putting dog food on spaghetti. Dubs hosts Dubs Private Reserve on KWSS every Thursday from 7pm-9pm.
So I went to Cincinnati to investigate these claims. I found them to be true indeed. A plain plate of spaghetti, ground beef in some kind of sauce, oyster crackers, shredded cheddar cheese, hot pepper sauce.
In summation, supporting Paraphernalia Boutique supports quite a few local artists. So check out one of their 2 locations. Tell your friends. Give them a follow on social media.

The intro song for this episode was recorded late one night in a place called Psychaus by Miles Tippett. What you are listening to is me messing around with a guitar pedal called an Eventide. It’s all improvisation, done with one guitar in one continuous take.
The bulk of the interview music is an electronic jam session by Philip Kills Dick, using a drum machine, ableton, Kaoss Pad KP-3, Axiom 25 Midi Controller, and an electric keyboard.
Except for that backwards harmonies at the end. I just got high tonight at 1 in the morning & made that short clip.
The exit song is from a band I was in 30 years ago this summer. Sound Bite House was a punk band from Northport, Long Island. I wasn’t there for the inception of the band. I came in after the original singer & 2nd guitar player left the band. My role was simple: Scream. Loud Guitar. Run around like a maniac.
During my trip back to NY, I made it a point to find my old punk records which included copies of all the Sound Bite House 7” vinyl. Dubs transferred them to wave files for me when I got back so they could be preserved. There is almost nothing online about the band I grew up in. That I toured with in the summer. Slept in their van. Made music with. Consider this the first of many mentions. The very first song I ever heard. The first song from their debut album. Technically, it started as a cassette. 1989ish.
Steal it, it’s free. Trust me, the band would want it that way.
